Q1 – What is not a valid method for creating a meter on a location?
- A – Use the New Row button
- B – By referencing a Rotating Item that has a Meter Group
- C – By referencing an Item that has a Meter
- D – By adding a Meter Group
Answer – C
The two normal methods for creating a meter on a location is to use the New Row button (A) on the Meters tab table window in the Locations application or by adding a Meter Group on the main tab (D).
Meters can also be added if the location references a Rotating Item and for the Item Master record to reference a Meter Group (B). The Meter Group from the item will be copied across to the location.
The answer (C) is not a valid method because a location cannot reference a non-rotating item, and if it referenced a rotating item then this Item Master record cannot reference a Meter only a Meter Group.

Q2 – What is the valid states of an asset meter?
- A – There is no status field or state for an asset meter
- B – Status of DRAFT, ACTIVE, INACTIVE, REMOVED
- C – There is a toggle to mark the asset meter as Active
- D – Status of ACTIVE, INACTIVE
Answer – C
There is no Status field, there is a field called ASSETMETER.ACTIVE, a YORN field which defaults to 1 (active) – the state. The question did use the word state rather than the word status, so (B) and (D) are incorrect, (A) is incorrect because there is a state field.
The asset meter must have an active state to accept meter readings (manually or rolled down) and to be used on a PM or Condition Monitoring record.

Q3 – True or False?
An asset meter has had several meter readings over the last couple of years, but we no longer want to record meter readings or retain the old meter readings, therefore we first make the asset meter inactive before using the trashcan button to delete the asset meter record.
Answer – False
The first part is correct, you toggle the Active field so that it is at inactive state. While there is a trashcan button for deleting the table window row it cannot be used after the asset meter has meter readings, it is used when setting up the meters and you have added the wrong meter.

Q4 – True or False.
An asset meter can receive its meter reading from a parent asset with the same meter, or from the asset’s location meter of the same name.
Answer – True
For asset meters the Accept Rolldown From field can be set to ASSET, LOCATION or NONE. When set to NONE the asset meter only accepts meter readings directly entered.

Q5 – Can you roll a meter reading down the location hierarchy from the parent location in the Primary system?
Answer – No
The answer is no, there is no meter reading rolldown for locations, but it would be a nice enhancement.

Q6 – The Enter Meter Readings action in the Locations application allows you to enter meter readings for active meters of which type?

The answer is again C, the action allows meter readings to be recorded for all three types of meters. There is no meter type called RUNHOURS or CUSTOM (D).
A long time ago the action was only used with what we now call CONTINUOUS type meters and then only for assets.

Q7 – What type of meter allows a delta value to be entered?
- A – GAUGE
- B – RUNHOURS
- C – CONTINUOUS
- D – CHARACTERISTIC
Answer – C
A Continuous meter type allows you to enter an actual value or a delta value, the difference between the current actual and the previous actual. Think of an odometer in a car it shows an actual number of miles or kilometers, but you may be required to just enter the value for the trip you made in the car. Maximo always calculates a delta value even if an actual value has been entered.
Runhours (B) is an example of a continuous meter, but it is not terminology used in Maximo. Gauge type meters (A) record measurements which are always actual values. Characteristic type meters (D) record observational values, often these are descriptive rather than numeric, but they could be numeric as there would be a description associated with each number.

Q8 – What is the purpose of a meter on the Item Master application?
- A – There is a Meter Group field on the Item Master application but no Meter field
- B – The Meter is copied to an asset when it references a Rotating Item
- C – It is used with fluids and records the quantity dispensed; it is most often used with drums containing the fluid so that you know how much in the drum remains
- D – When a quantity of the item is issued to an asset with the same meter the meter is incremented by the quantity issued
Answer – D
There is both a Meter Group and Meter field on the Item Master application (A). The Meter Group is used with items marked as rotating and the Meter field with non-rotating items. It is the Meter Group field which is copied to an asset (B).
The Meter field is most often used with fluids, oils, petrol or diesel where you issue a quantity, but it is not a physical meter (C).
The quantity issued is the delta value for a meter reading of a CONTINUOUS type of meter on the asset referenced on the issued item transaction (D). This used to be called Metered Material Usage and works only when the asset has the same meter name as the item.

Q9 – True or False?
You can only update previous meter readings for CONTINUOUS type meters when using the action Manage Meter Reading History.
Answer – True
The Manage Meter Reading History action opens a dialog with two tabs, Continuous Meter Readings, and Characteristic and Gauge Meter Readings. The records in the Characteristic and Gauge Meter Readings tab are read-only.

Q10 – How are three of the Since fields in the Reset/Replace Meters action dialog automatically reset?
- A – Each field is controlled by a security option that is granted to those users who need to reset the value
- B – By completing a work order with a work type aligned to the particular field
- C – By a set of Reset fields found in the Work Order Tracking application and the dialog called Reset Meter Readings which opens when completing a work order where the work type has been set to open the dialog.
- D – By changing the value in the Reset/Replace Meters action, an audit trail is recorded so that you know who/when the reset took place.
Answer – B
There are four since fields, Since Install, Since Last Repair, Since Last Overhaul, and Since Last Inspection. These can all be manually changed, but there is no audit trail as standard, although one could be configured. The question asked for an automatic reset, so (D) is not the correct answer. Similarly (A) is not correct as each field is not controlled by a security option, the security option is on the action Reset/Replace Meters.
There is no Reset Meter Readings dialog, one did exist a long time ago, but it wasn’t in the Work Order Tracking application, and it didn’t have a set of reset fields (C).
Answer (B) is correct, a bit unusual for the shortest answer to be the correct one. In the Organizations application and Work Type Options action there is a Type field which defaults to NONE. This can be set to INSPECTION, OVERHAUL or REPAIR. When a work order completes then the work type is evaluated and if the value of the Type field is one of these three values, then the corresponding Since field is reset automatically to zero for all meters on the referenced location or asset.
