Asset Classification

The Asset Classification is the classification selected and applied to the asset; it is normally a classification which is at the lowest level in a classification hierarchy.

A classification hierarchy for assets in Maximo is normally two levels, the type of asset and the subclass of that asset type, for example Pump, Centrifugal or Valve, Gate. It would be the Centrifugal Pump or Gate Valve classification that would be applied to an asset. Classifications should be defined as nouns and reused with other classifications, for example Centrifugal can be used with Fans, a Centrifugal Fan.

When a classification is applied to an asset the attributes of the classification are copied to the asset to form the Asset Specification. Sometimes, the attributes in the Asset Specification may originate from the parent classification or a higher classification level.

The Asset Classification can be entered directly in the Assets application, or it may be created when an Asset Template is applied. If the asset references a Rotating Item, then the Asset Classification and its Specification is controlled from the Rotating Item and is defined in the Item Master application. Changing the classification on a rotating item will update the classification on all assets and locations that reference it. The classification field will be read-only on an asset that references a rotating item, a rotating asset.

Locations also have a classification which operates identically. There is a Classification Search on Asset and Location fields across Maximo, this uses a classification drilldown to narrow the search. Often the most effective way to find locations and assets is by using the description generation feature of classifications and then to search by the description.

The Asset Classification is an attribute of an asset, which is a site level object.
