Asset Type

The Asset Type is used for grouping assets and is used in the Health application of the Maximo Application Suite.

The Asset Type is defined in a Synonym Domain called ASSETTYPE with Internal values of Facilities, Fleet, IT, and Production. These can be broken down to provide a two-level hierarchy. Use the Asset Type to define a group of assets on which asset health scoring will be applied. If you are not aiming to start considering how you might use MAS Health, then it might be better to use an Asset Classification instead and save this field for when you do start to explore MAS Health.

Outside of MAS Health, the Asset Type field will be found in the Asset Templates and Assets applications. You will also find a reference on a Warranty/Service Contract and in the Service Groups application. You normally start Service Management activities by defining Service Groups and Codes, and then associating the assets, locations and asset types that provide those services. An Asset Type can also be a filter criteria on a Service Level Agreement.

The Asset Type field is sometimes used to indicate the assets maintained or owned by an Asset Department; this should be avoided. There is an Asset Department field in the Calibration section of the Asset Templates application, and it also exists on the Assets object (PLUSCASSETDEPT).

The Synonym Domain for ASSETTYPE is defined at the System level.
