A locationA physical place where assets exist and where work can be performed. More is a place where assets physically exist.
Work is performed against the assets at the location, but work can also be performed against a location without referencing an asset. For example, in a building you may do work against lighting (a location), there might be hundreds of lighting assets that do not exist in the Maximo database because there is little or no value in tracking them individually, this type of location is sometimes referenced as a functional position, although this is not a Maximo term.
When you reference an asset on a work order the asset’s location is also referenced on the work order. This allows you to track maintenance history against both the operating location and the individual assets, this is important when assets are swapped for repair or replacement.
Locations are most often of a location type called an Operating LocationA location with a location type of OPERATING. More, these can be related in one or more hierarchy or network location systemsA Location System is a set of operating locations joined together to form a hierarchy or a network. More of which one hierarchy is called the Primary Hierarchy. There are multiple other location typesThere are eight location types of which the most common one is an Operating Location. More which are created from the Locations application, found in the Assets module. An inventory storeroom is another type of location created from the Storerooms application, which is found in the Inventory module.
A location has similar capabilities to assets; it has meters, safety related information and the attributes of an applied classification. A location can have a service address and can be positioned on a map. Locations and Assets both exist at the SiteA structural element of a Maximo database that is used for data separation. More level and will have the attribute SITEID as part of their unique key.
There is special type of location called a Repair Facility which is often used with transportation assets, trains, boats, trucks, and planes, a location which allows assets from other sites to be repaired.
