Location Hierarchy

A Location Hierarchy is a hierarchy of operating locations.

Operating Locations exist in a Location System. For each site there must be a hierarchical location system that is marked as the Primary, convention is that it is also called PRIMARY.

In the Locations application an operating location can have only one parent, but several children. You build the location hierarchy top down. Although there is no limit to the number of levels in the hierarchy, there is practical limit of eight levels. When the hierarchy is displayed in the Location Drilldown, navigation becomes more difficult with an increase in the number of levels.

When you create a new operating location, you use the action Associate Systems with Location, you select both the system and the parent location, this adds the location into the location hierarchy.

All locations in the location hierarchy must belong to the same Site. The Location Hierarchy will be found in the Site based object LOCHIERARCHY. The LOCANCESTOR table will be built automatically, it consists of the location and its parent to the top of the hierarchy and is used to provide performance in the location drilldown.
