Salvage Locations are places where assets are moved at their end of life.
Salvage Locations functionally work the same as REPAIR and VENDOR and the three are called Asset TypeThe Asset Type is used for grouping assets and is used in the Health application of the Maximo Application Suite. More Locations in the IBM documentation. I have singled it out separately because with asset end of life you do not expect the asset to return into service, and the asset status will become DECOMMISSIONED whereas with REPAIR and VENDOR the asset status is likely to remain at OPERATING.
An asset may be deemed unrepairable when it is in a REPAIR or VENDOR location and can be moved to a SALVAGE location. You use the action Move/Modify Asset to move an asset to a Salvage LocationSalvage Locations are places where assets are moved at their end of life. More, the To Location Select Value has the location type as a column. This will create an ASSETTRANS record which can be seen from the action View Asset Move History. It can of course be moved directly from an operating location to the salvage location, you do not need to go via a repair location.
Locations of type SALVAGE are standalone locationsA physical place where assets exist and where work can be performed. More which cannot be a part of a location hierarchy.
An asset can be at DECOMMISSIONED state before it is moved to a salvage location, or it can have the status change after it has been moved. What you do expect is that all assets at a salvage location are at DECOMMISSIONED state, which makes this a bit different from a repair location.
You may add a synonym status at the DECOMMISSIONED level called RECYCLED to indicate the point at which the asset no longer exists in its original form, broken up for spares, added to recycle bins, or physically removed from the site.
Salvage Locations exist at the SITE level.
