Q1 – All these descriptions are true, to some extent, but which is the best description of a rotating item, and can you order them from best to worse?

  • A – An inventory item where the balance in the storeroom is tracked individually as serialised assets.
  • B – An inventory item with moving parts that rotate around an axis, for example a pump.
  • C – An item which is used as a template for locations and assets.
  • D – Inventory stock, which is tracked to operating locations, repair shops and back into inventory – rotating stock.

Answer – A, then D, then C, then B

A – the serialised assets are the rotating assets.

D – describes why it is called “rotating” but does not reference the term “asset”.

C – this is a function of a rotating item but would not be recognised by a non-Maximo user.

B – Smaller pumps, perhaps, but some very large pumps would never be described as rotating they would never enter a storeroom, they are just too large.

Q2 – What item types can be set to be rotating?

Answer – Items and Tools

Items and Tools can exist in storerooms where the balance in the storeroom is tracked individually by an asset.

A Service Item cannot be set to be rotating. A Service Item cannot exist in a storeroom.

Q3 – Why is the “Rotating?” field on the Item Master application enterable for some non-rotating items but not for others?

PS. Give yourself at least a minute to come up with an answer.

Answer

If a non-rotating item has a balance then you cannot change it to be a rotating item.

Q4 – When can you change a rotating item to become a non-rotating item?

  • A – When there are assets for the item that are only at OBSOLETE or NOT READY status and not held in a storeroom.
  • B – When there are no rotating assets for the item in any storeroom.
  • C – Only when there are no assets and no locations that reference the rotating item.
  • D – When there are only OBSOLETE assets for the item in a storeroom.

Answer – C

If all the rotating assets are at OBSOLETE status and not in a storeroom, you still cannot change the rotating item to make it non-rotating.

You need to go to individual assets that reference the Rotating Item and use the Change Item Number action with the New Item field left blank.

For Locations you can blank the Rotating Item field.

Q5 – What three changes can be made to an asset when using the Change Item Number action in the Assets application?

Answer

  1. Change the rotating item reference from one value to another.
  2. Change the asset to become a rotating asset from a non-rotating asset.
  3. Change the asset to become a non-rotating asset from a rotating asset.

Q6 – Can a non-rotating asset exist in an inventory storeroom?

Answer – No

Only assets marked as rotating can exist in a Maximo storeroom. Assets that are being disposed are often found in a physical storeroom, but they cannot exist with a balance unless they are marked as rotating. Use a location of type SALVAGE for disposing of assets after their useful life.

Q7 – What four methods can be used for adding a balance to a rotating item in an inventory storeroom?

Take your time with this question.

Answer

  1. Data Load, this is often performed during a Maximo project.
  2. Use a purchase order and receive the quantity of rotating item and perform the serialisation step.
  3. Manually create the asset, and then duplicate it before moving the assets into the storeroom with Move/Modify action.
  4. Use an Asset Template against a rotating item, then Move/Modify the assets into the storeroom. PS. There is a technique for creating rotating assets from an Asset Template, it is not available out of the box.

Q8 – Can you perform a current balance adjustment on a rotating item in an inventory storeroom?

Answer

No, you will receive an error message.

Q9 – Can you perform a physical count adjustment on a rotating item in an inventory storeroom?

Answer

No, you will receive an error message. If you perform a physical count and find that one of the quantity of assets is not in the storeroom, determine which one and change status of the asset to MISSING.

Q10 – Which of Meter Group and Meter fields on the Item Master application can be used with a rotating item?

  • A – Neither Meter Group nor Meter can be used.
  • B – Only Meter Group can be used with a rotating item.
  • C – Only Meter can be used with a rotating item.
  • D – Both Meter Group and Meter fields can be used with a rotating item.

Answer – B

The Meter Group field is copied across to the rotating asset or the location that references the rotating item, which in turn creates the set of asset or location meters from the meters in the meter group.

The Meter field can be used only with non-rotating items, and is used to increment the asset meter by the quantity of the item issued, for example, fuel, oils.
