A common phrase is that Maximo has a multiple organization and multiple site data structure. Multiple sites can exist in an organization.

An organization is used for data sharing. A site is used for data separation. 

When defining an Organization, you will need to reference both the Item Set and the Company Set, at least the main base currency, and then make it active. Reference data like calendars, vendors, crafts, labor, and financial records are defined at the organization level and shared across multiple sites that belong to the organization. When deciding on how you will use Organizations and Sites you should consider the legal entities of a client’s organisation, and how you would integrate with a financial system, even if this is not something you need to do in the first phase of a Maximo implementation. Ideally you should look into the future and consider where your Maximo journey will or could take you. 

The Organization object is a System level object, the key field for an Organization is ORGID. You cannot change the identifier of an organization, therefore take time in deciding this.
